July 1st, 2022. Canada Day. I love Canada. We're July 1st, 2022. Canada Day.

I love Canada. We're not a perfect country by any means, but I do believe that, for the most part, we are a country of people who try to do better to make life work better for everyone.

And yet. This time last year, Canada horrified the world with news of bodies—children's bodies—discovered buried secretly at residential schools across our country and history. The residential schools themselves are a bad enough secret, but the heartbreaking and infuriating evidence of the sordid past AND present mistreatment of our Indigenous peoples is beyond the pale.

And where is the news of this today? What has been done? What has been discovered and uncovered? What have we learned? Who has been held accountable for the genocide of 1,000s of children who were ripped from the arms of their families (because many involved are still alive)?

We have Universal Healthcare, but is it really universal if it's nearly impossible to find a doctor? Our medical system is broken and has been for over 30 years. This isn't an overnight problem, it's the obvious result of decades of doing nothing.

I love Canada, but I'm feeling a lot of feelings. It could be because today also marks what was meant to be my due date. I don't know if I'll always remember and feel grief on the first of July (anger, sadness, helplessness to change what's happened), but today, it's firing up a deep desire in me for us to come together and do better for our communities, our country, the world and all those with whom we share it.

So while we take time off to be with our friends and family, to celebrate a country that absolutely is amazing, let us also join together and use our voices to call for more to be done and done better.

There's a lot going on in the world. There's a lot calling for our attention. It feels like a time of reckoning and maybe it is. Because we know better. And if we know better, we must do better.

Happy Canada Day. ❤️

What if you didn’t need a warrant to vindicate y What if you didn’t need a warrant to vindicate your desire and justify your decisions? (you don’t)

What if you could leave something good for something better, because that’s what you wanted and your desire was reason enough? (you can and it is)

What if your situation didn’t have to be dire before you changed it? (it doesn’t)

What if we didn’t need to run our choices and ourselves into the ground before we gave ourselves permission to take our next steps or change direction? (we don’t)

What if you can choose your direction from your desire and your needs? (you can) <3

You can choose your direction from your desire and You can choose your direction from your desire and your needs.

You don’t need to justify or validate your needs or your want.

You can leave something good for something better, or even just different. That you want a change is a good enough reason.

A relationship or workplace doesn’t need to become (more) toxic for you to be allowed to choose to leave it.

We don’t need to be imprisoned by our choices before we choose to set ourselves free.

It's Not You, It's Me Have you ever needed to mak It's Not You, It's Me

Have you ever needed to make a decision where none of the options were necessarily ones you really wanted?

I have one of those decisions to make right now. It includes a bit of a confession and I'm not too thrilled about it. I'm embarrassed and a bit sad, but I know it's the right decision for me for now.

The thing is that I've been working on a book for years now. More years than I'd care to admit, because if I'm being truthful, I'd have to fess up to more time spent not working on my book than actually writing it.

It turns out that writing a book is not an easy endeavour. Who knew? Evidently not me. Not only are you writing an entire book, which is an awful lot of ideas, along with an awful lot of finding the right (perfect?) words to express those ideas, but also a whole bunch of other work that is less obvious.

The secret side hustle of writing a book that no one talks about—at least, in my experience—includes a hefty amount of the following:

• Grappling with old, annoyingly familiar but no less effective limiting beliefs about my talent, skill and capacity.
• Crippling self doubt, self criticism and self loathing (is my book garbage? am I garbage?).
• Guilt (I didn't do what I said I'd do when I said I'd do it).
• Shame (I help others with this stuff all the time, so I'm a total hypocrite).
• Wrestling with imposter syndrome (who the hell do I think I am to write this? I don't have a PhD, so I have no right to share my ideas).
• Fears and survival mechanisms: patterned actions that I habitually fall into whenever I'm doing anything outside of my comfort zone.
• Procrastination (doing anything but the thing I said I'd do).
• Losing faith and trust in myself (because of the procrastination).
• Avoidance, distraction and diversion.

All of these are relevant obstacles in my experience, but the thing I need to talk about today is that last point: avoidance, distraction and diversion.

Wanna know a secret? I don't think balance is a re Wanna know a secret? I don't think balance is a real place that exists.

Balance isn't a destination. It's not a perfect resting place or point on a map or graph.

Instead of focusing so much of our energy on finding this magicalrishical place on the head of a pin where the conditions are perfect and we can relax and enjoy our lives, what if we focused instead on what the experience of life is that we’re craving?

Trying to find balance implies that it's missing in the first place. If you have to go looking for it, it means you don't have it to begin with.

Rather than be endlessly hunting for something that doesn't exist at the cost of our ability to enjoy our lives RIGHT NOW, what if you CREATED it instead?

Don’t go hunting for balance. Learn how to make your own.

It can be hard to allow ourselves to change. It ca It can be hard to allow ourselves to change. It can feel vulnerable or like dropping part of our identity. It might feel like giving up, giving in or even losing.

And that’s a hard place to find ourselves. Even if all we're changing is our opinion, it might feel like we’re admitting we were incorrect before.

But we don’t expect a tree to stay the same forever. A tree changes because it’s growing, and so are we, when we allow ourselves to review our thoughts and beliefs, either because they aren’t serving us anymore, or because new information has become available.

Maybe changing our minds isn’t a sign of weakness or flakiness, but rather a sign of a growth mindset and the strength, courage and resilience required to learn and change.
